Religion is not about being a team player
You know, a lot of people say that, any religion can make you a good person, can make you a nice person, can make you kind, can make you decent, and that you can be a kind, decent, good, nice person with no religion. So what difference does it make really what religion you follow? Well, if you see your religion that way, then you're misunderstanding what religion is for. Religion isn't for making you a nice person. That's not the purpose of religion.
The purpose of religion is to worship your creator and to do what you're told. That's the purpose, to do what you are told by your creator. That entails being a good person, that entails being kind, that entails being nice and all of those things. But to say that the purpose of religion is to make you a nice person and get along with people well is like saying that the purpose of a job is to be a team player. You were hired to do a particular job.
Now in order to do that job, part of what they like you to be able to do in a company is to be a team player, to get along with your coworkers. But that's not what you were hired to do. You're hired to do a specific thing. So if you don't do it for your boss, you're not gonna get paid. Everybody in the office might like you.
But if you don't do the thing that you're supposed to do for the one who you work for, then you're not doing your job. So religion is like that. You're supposed to do what Allah told you to do for him, for his sake. He's the one you work for. So you have to make sure that he is happy with you.
It doesn't matter if everybody in the world is happy with you. They don't hold the keys to Jannah. Being a good Muslim, being a good Christian, being a good Jew, being a good Hindu, being a good Buddhist, being a good atheist, being a good humanist. You may be able to get along with people really well and people may really like you. But the question is the, what's gonna happen to you then?
For whom are you doing it? Are you doing all of that for the sake of the other people? Well, they can't help you on your. So you have to make sure that you're doing it for the one for whom you work and that you are doing what the one for whom you work told you to do. That's what religion is about.
It's about worshiping the one who created you and the one who has the authority to tell you what to do, the one who can forgive your sins or punish you for them, and the one who can let you into paradise after you die. That's what religion is about. Don't lose sight of that.
